What I particularly like about GYCT is the fact that it supports such a wide range of people from the local community ...
Jillian Buckingham initially joined GYCT as a volunteer on the Uniquely Chic fashion project. A retired primary school teacher, she had been looking online for ideas to keep herself busy and meet new people, whilst helping others in her community.
The Uniquely Chic opportunity caught her eye as it was a craft based project. She had several metres of curtain fabric left over and thought of using this to make shoulder bags which could be sold to make money for the Trust. The bags, which were fully lined with decorative buttons, were featured at the UC Fashion Show at Great Yarmouth Library.
The Uniquely Chic project finished and Jillian moved on to volunteer on various other projects, including teaching 1:1 English on behalf of the International Friendship Club in Thorpe Hamlet.
Alongside her volunteering Jillian fundraises for her local church. Although she no longer volunteers on a regular basis for the Trust she has retained her connections with Joleen Azevedo, the Volunteering Coordinator, and she has become a GYCT supporter. Last summer she decided to hold a garden party, inviting contributions in aid of the Priory Friendship Club. The party included country dancing and shanty singing from a local group and Jillian raised a fantastic £112.77 through donations.
