Willow Day Nursery

About Willow Day Nursery

Willow Day Nursery (formerly Great Yarmouth College Nursery) joined the GYCT group in August 2018. Its location next to Great Yarmouth College (Lichfield Road entrance) makes it an ideal childcare facility for college students, but it is equally used by families from other parts of Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and the outlying villages beyond.

It's currently the only nursery in Great Yarmouth to provide childcare for babies (the age range is 3 months to 5 years) and it opens year round, Monday to Friday 8am to 5.30pm, to meet the needs of working families. The nursery only closes for Bank Holidays, the period between Christmas and New Year, and three staff training days.

Manager, Justine McGarey, and her deputies, Michelle Jacques and Louise Newbury, pride themselves on their strong links with the Southtown community. They have worked hard to build good relationships with the local schools, particularly Edward Worlledge Ormiston Academy and Southtown Primary, to ensure that their children are school-ready and well prepared to make the transition to the next stage in their education.

The nursery is split into three age groups: 3 months to 2 years (Baby Room), 2 to 3 years (Toddler Room) and 3 to 5 years (Playroom). All the rooms are spacious, colourful and bright, with plenty of space for active babies and toddlers to explore. The garden is shared by the Playroom and the Toddler Room, providing a sense of community where the children can interact and learn from each another. The older children develop a sense of pride caring for the younger children, becoming excellent role models, whilst allowing the younger children to learn from their peers, for example manners, behaviour, sharing etc..

Hot lunches are available, as well as breakfast and tea, and the nursery has received a 5-star rating in its recent Food Hygiene inspection.

The nursery team work alongside parents to track individual learning journeys and tailor activities to maximise each child's progress. Home learning projects are set each month to encourage parents and children to work together and a lending library has been set up for nursery children and their siblings to be able to borrow books to read at home.

Staff are currently working to create a Sensory Room as a space to work with small groups of children who may need a little extra support. Manager, Justine, has attended Makaton training, a language programme that uses signs and symbols to help children learn to communicate. Through sharing her training with staff and children Makaton is used to support spoken language in the nursery and help to develop speech and language skills.

Holiday care is available year round, including the lead-up to Christmas (the nursery closes between Christmas and New Year). The Holiday Club is open to all children aged 3 to 7 years and plans for 2019 include outings to Southtown Common for games and nature walks. Staff also hope to be able to take the older nursery children for walks and visits to places of interest in the local community to widen their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.
