Ethan's Amazing Journey

Ethan Bird was born prematurely at just 26 weeks and weighing an astonishing 1lb 1oz. His first few months were very uncertain, suffering from chronic lung disease, and at 9 months he made an emergency transfer to Adenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge for lifesaving treatment. Since then he has spent several more periods at Adenbrooke's, having a gastronomy tube fitted and for breathing support.

His parents, Sarah and Scott Bird, were warned that Ethan may never walk or talk, but Ethan has fought back. Not only is he walking, but he managed to start nursery at Little Blossoms, beside Filby Primary School, joining in with activities and enjoying the company of staff and the other children. Since the birth of his brother, Jude, now aged 20 months, he has also begun communicating.

In July he was able to take part in the nursery's graduation ceremony before taking the next step into 'big school'. “I thought I’d be really tearful about Ethan starting school", said Sarah, "but seeing how much he’s come on since attending nursery has made me really excited about him taking this next big step.”

Ethan has moved to John Grant School in Caister-on-Sea. We are going to miss him at nursery, but wish him success and happiness in the next stage of his education.
