Lowestoft Model Engineering and Model Making Exhibition

Getting Ready for LOWMEX

The Nexus Centre is always busy, but just now it's a veritable hive of activity as the team prepares for a double helping of key local events.

The annual Great Yarmouth Christmas Fayre is of course approaching rapidly ... but before that comes LOWMEX!

For anyone not in the know LOWMEX is the annual Lowestoft Model Engineering and Model Making Exhibition. It's very family friendly and it's already in its 5th year.

The exhibition provides a unique opportunity to showcase the skill and craftsmanship of a range of local and not-so-local artisans and modelling clubs. Among the many highlights on display will be model locomotives, traction engines, cars, lorries, model railway layouts, working stationary engines, model boats, radio controlled trucks, fixed wing aircraft and drones, together with clocks, automata, Lego, dolls houses and steampunk. Refreshments are available and there is free parking.

The event is organised and run by the Halesworth and District Model Engineering Society (HDMES) in aid of local charity S.O.L.D. (Special Objective for the Local Disabled) - a charity based on the South Lowestoft Industrial Estate, which is run by and for disabled people.

The timing couldn't be better to get half term off to a good start. Although details of this year's highlights haven't yet been released, last year's activities included a portable miniature railway giving passenger rides, along with miniature traction engines and lorries in steam, with some also giving rides. Control line tethered fixed wing aircraft were flying all weekend and there was also a Blacksmith demonstration by a local Farrier.

Make sure you visit the Nexus Engineering stand, where the team will be running yet more new challenges and activities for children of all ages to test their dexterity and problem solving skills, including:

  • An Inter-school competition – based on Lego
  • Robot arm activities
  • Steddy Eddy
  • Giant Jenga
  • Foam Shapes building
  • Lego boxes
  • Various laser cut models for sale, including: Unicorn, Mammoth, Santa Stop! sign, and more!
