New Pathways for Young Engineers
Pipeline of Information Launch Event (Wed 2 Nov)
Last month the Nexus Engineering Training Centre hosted the launch event for OPITO’S annual (Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation) Pipeline of Information programme at its Gorleston Beacon Park centre.
The programme runs in partnership with Beacon East and gives teachers/tutors in local schools and colleges the opportunity to learn more about the range of careers and routes into the energy industry, so that they can take this information back to their students.
Nexus is a purpose-built engineering training centre fitted with specialist industry-standard equipment available for business hire and school and college use. Working hand-in-hand with the sector, Nexus trains the next generation of engineers and raises the profile of engineering.
The launch included senior industry speakers from Perenco and Seajacks UK, a guided tour of the Nexus premises and a site visit to Pharos Marine at their new Beacon Park facility, with contributions from key personnel, graduates and apprentices who have developed in the company via the local training bodies route.
Pathways into Engineering (Fri 4 Nov)
Later in the same week Nexus held its first ‘Pathways into Engineering’ event. 11 students from Sir John Leman High School, Lynn Grove Academy and East Norfolk Sixth Form College met at the Nexus Centre to visit the factories of local companies and meet key personnel from SMS, Gee-Force, Icanbea, EEEGR (East of England Energy Group) and ECITB (Engineering Construction Industry Training Board). Talks were also given by Icanbea and ECITB.
Pathways into Engineering is a Nexus initiative, which offers local secondary school children and students from East Norfolk Sixth Form the opportunity to see what engineering companies actually look like from the inside.
The day was so successful that Nexus will be running a second event on Friday 15th December, involving Pharos Marine, Probe Oil, Icanbea and ENSF (talking about apprenticeships).
