Pilling Park Nursery Launch

Pilling Park Nursery Opens

Pilling Park Nursery has been declared ‘officially open’ by two of its new recruits, Olivia Wood and Chloe Caraway. The nursery is the seventh in a chain of nurseries owned by Great Yarmouth Community Trust (GYCT) in Norwich and the Great Yarmouth area, and has received a £5,000 start-up grant from Norfolk County Council.

Its location within Pilling Park Community Centre puts it at the heart of a busy local community in a setting which backs onto a park, with woodland beyond. Strong links have already been established with the nearby Lionwood Infant & Nursery School, to ensure that children are well prepared when the time comes for their transition to school life.

Nursery Manager, Katherine Gaskin, who has moved across from the Trust’s flagship Priory Day Nursery, plans to take full advantage of the nursery’s parkside location, with plans for a forest school, nature trails and woodland walks to support the children’s understanding and knowledge of the world around them.

Inspired by the positive outcomes seen at sister nursery, Little People’s Montessori in Norwich, Pilling will adopt some of its principles as a base for learning. Katherine says:

“We plan to establish a ‘work cycle’ for more focused learning, using a ‘dip-in, dip-out’ approach to enable children to choose the activities they would like to engage in, so that we encourage independent decision making. Although principally child-led, there will also be adult-led activities, such as cooking, modelling or mark making. Seasonal themes and cultural celebrations will be used to introduce the children to the cycles of nature, other countries and different ways of life, whilst also helping to develop their core literacy and numeracy skills.”

Pilling Park Nursery Opens

The nursery currently has 19 places for children aged 2 to 5 years in its main Hedgehog Room, but this will increase to 24 places with the opening of an additional small nurture room. Katherine will be supported by two Level 3 qualified Early Years Practitioners. Opening hours are 9am to 12 noon, Monday to Friday during term time, but this will increase to include an afternoon 1-4pm session as soon as the nursery starts to fill up.

GYCT, a registered charity, has been in the childcare business since 2004, with nurseries in Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Filby. Childcare is just one arm of the GYCT children and families group of services, which also includes the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Sure Start Children’s Centres, Horatio House Independent School in Lound and the Nexus Centre, an engineering skills training centre in Gorleston.
