Befores and Afters
The Befores and Afters Project is a joint development idea devised between Great Yarmouth Community Trust and the East Anglian Anchorage Trust, and funded by Virgin Money.
The small, skilled team of staff and volunteers are based at the Priory Centre, where they prepare healthy lunches at an affordable price for nursery children, school pupils and other vulnerable groups in the area. There are plans to extend this provision to other educational institutions, elderly and vulnerable people living at home and care providers.
The project was set up after a survey completed by parents at local nurseries showed that, although they would prefer their child to have a hot meal during the day, many nurseries are asking parents to bring in a cold packed lunch for their child. This is mainly due to cost and wastage, as nursery staff are generally required to place orders the previous day, leading to many meals being wasted if children do not attend.
At Befores and Afters the meals are prepared in bulk, divided into individual portions and frozen within two hours to lock in the nutrients. Individual meals are then taken from the freezer and delivered to the nurseries/schools to meet the exact number of orders on the day required. Staff at the destination organisation are required only to reheat the food.
Menus are planned by chef, Kyle Cousins, according to clients' specific nutritional needs in consultation with local celebrity chef, Richard Hughes. Ingredients include seasonal fruit and vegetables, fish, pasta, potatoes and a variety of meats.
The project is also creating jobs and volunteering opportunities, with training available not just in cooking, but in employability related certification, such as Food Hygiene, Health and Safety, Manual Handling, Driving, First Aid etc.
